WHIMS and WORDS:

An Experiment and Experience (Hopefully)

Dearest Reader,

I would like to thank you again for wiling away your minutes on this, my attempt at a website. The creation of this website, and all its content, was a novel experience, for me. On the site, you will find an ebook, an interactive story, and a review of a piece of digital literature. The ebook, containing two short stories, and the interactive piece are still works in progress, I’m afraid (endings are hard).

I suppose I should tell you a little about myself as a writer. The majority of my work takes the form of epistolary essays and literary and experimental short stories. Typically, I like to keep it dark and ugly, a la the Russians, so, fair warning. In the digital landscape, I’m not sure what my writing will look like. I think it’s too early to make a judgment call on that, and I’ve never claimed to be able to tell the future. What I can say is, I’m excited about the possibilities that digital platforms provide. There is so much more one can do. The constraints of paper and ink fade away in the digital realm, providing seemingly limitless possibilities to what can be created. Stories can have any number of endings, interactivity with the reader is now possible (within limits), and sound and text effects can be added, just to name a few. The aspect of digital literature which I find most intriguing is the ease and quickness with which point-of-view shifts can take place. Traditional, analog literature can offer these shifts, as well, but not nearly as often or effectively as can be achieved digitally. Narrator perspective shifts introduce ambiguity into qualitative labels the reader might want to assign to specific characters or actions. The world, ironically, becomes less binary, and gray starts to shade everything. Understanding is never a bad thing, and hopefully, digital literature can make people think before making judgements.
